    What is the ‘March Theory’?

According to the various self-styled relationship gurus on Instagram and TikTok, ‘March Theory’ means that you can expect sudden shifts in your love life before March ends. While the overall hypothesis alludes to major shakeups in the romance sector, several variations have gained popularity online.

One viral video by creator Chiara King states that “you either unexpectedly fall in love or an ex comes back”. March, according to creators subscribing to this version of the theory, is a month when singles or newly heartbroken find love or the courage to take a chance in a new relationship.

Then there are those who claim that March is the month of breakups as the blinders of February’s Valentine’s optimism come off and you become more aware of the relationship’s shortcomings in March. Relationships that are destined to fail find themselves ending this month.

Any professional therapist worth their salt would tell you to not blindly buy into whatever new theory the Internet decides to churn up with a catchy title that week. While they wouldn’t be wrong in the least, it’s worth examining why people believe that March could mean a new chapter for their love lives.

The month of March is considered to be the month of new beginnings as it marks the transition between Winter to Spring. The latter tends to represent themes of growth and renewal, which align with the theory’s claim that people seek closure and healing through new relationships in the month.

March also marks the advent of Aries season which is the first month of the astrological calendar. March 2025, in particular, has been a cosmic rollercoaster. With Venus and Mercury in retrograde, last week’s lunar eclipse and the upcoming new moon solar eclipse, the relationship shakeup doesn’t seem very far-fetched.

Whether you believe in the theory or not, it could be a good time to step back and evaluate your relationship and think about how it aligns with your future goals for yourself.
