In an annoyingly catchy song from the 2023 Luv Ranjan directorial Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar, Ranbir Kapoor’s character sings about how men fall in love over and over again, as is their nature. In a sentence we never thought we’d be saying in 2025, a new study conducted by researchers at the Australian National University might just have corroborated his claims!

The study, published in the Biology of Sex Differences, surveyed 808 young adults between the ages of 18 and 25 from 33 different countries. It aimed to understand people’s different approaches to romantic love and bridge the knowledge gap around why and how people fall in and out of love.

The study made some interesting discoveries around romantic love, especially around how men fall in lovePexels

It took a deep dive into the behavioural and cognitive differences between men and women when it comes to our expressions of romantic love. The results were surprising, to say the least!

Men, on average, take just over four weeks to fall in love, a much faster rate than women.

“The mean love progression score for females was 1.92 months after romantic relationship formation whereas for males it was 0.98 months, indicating that males fell in love approximately one month sooner than females did,” says the study.

It also revealed that men are likely to experience romantic love more frequently than women. The men surveyed for the study were found to have been in love on an average of 2.6 times, while female participants reported 2.3 times on average.

However, if you thought the study negates the rise of alpha male posturing in modern dating that’s prevalent on social media these days, hit the brakes.

“Females had higher intensity of romantic love, higher commitment, and higher obsessive thinking about a loved one than males,” says the research. So, while men might fall in love more frequently and quickly, as compared to women, the intensity of women’s romantic feelings outweighs those of men.

Then there’s also this concluding statement from the study, “Men will have fallen in love sooner than females because the male fitness landscape favours quantity of potential mates over quality, whereas the opposite is true for females”.

Another day, another wonderful insight into the world of modern dating, we say!
