Have you ever wondered whether there could be a wedding to trump the grand scale of Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant’s nuptials? The answer might be the upcoming wedding of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez.

Morris Ceron, director general of the Venice council, confirmed that the wedding is all set to be hosted in the floating metropolis, according to his statement to the London Times. “Seven months ago, Domenico Dolce (of Dolce and Gabbana) told me Bezos was getting married. I got to work to bring this marriage of the century to Venice. That’s how it started.” The city’s mayor, Luigi Brugnaro, added that they “were in competition with other places but we won out.”

According to the newspaper, Bezos has booked several (not all, says the mayor) of Venice’s water taxis to transport their guests around the city to and to and fro from the yacht. It also reported that the guest list has closed at around 250 guests, including Katy Perry, Eva Longoria, Kris Jenner, Kim Kardashian, Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner. Whether or not US President Donald Trump makes an appearance is not confirmed.

The Daily Mail reported that most of Venice’s top hotels, the Gritti Palace and Aman Venice, have been booked completely by Bezos. The rooms at the hotels can set you back a cool ₹27,00,000 per night. So while the billionaire might have dismissed the rumoured $600 million budget for the wedding, it’s still not going to come cheap!

While the Ambani wedding caused a few noise complaints in Italy during the cruise bit of the wedding and some traffic disruptions for the Mumbai part of the wedding, Bezos and Sánchez’s wedding might have some more serious consequences.

Since the floods of 2019, Venice has been under environmental peril, and the city has imposed restrictions on large ships entering the Venice lagoon and even limited the size of tourist groups.

While one source had told the Daily Mail that “all the money in the world cannot change those regulations”, the mayor of Venice assures that the city is more than capable of handling the grand wedding.

“We are mutually working and supporting the organisers to ensure that the event will be absolutely respectful of the fragility and uniqueness of the city,” said the mayor in a statement. “The many speculations and fake news circulating about Jeff Bezos’ wedding are completely unfounded.”

He even assured tourists hoping for a June Venetian vacation that they can enjoy their holiday without worrying about it being disrupted by the wedding, saying that it’s their “utmost priority to make sure the city functions as normal, for all, with no abnormal disruption to anyone.”

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez went public with their relationship in 2019 and got engaged in May 2023. Stay tuned for more updates on their wedding.
