Fair or Foul: This Couple Charged Guests Money for Water at Their Outdoor Wedding

The worst part? The bar at the reception was cash only!

While weddings are, and should be, all about the couple getting married, it’s also important for the people gathered to celebrate their big day together with them to feel special and cherished. Traditionally, this is done by paying special attention to details such as location and catering for the guests.

While not every wedding might have an Ambani-style service rolled out for the guests (or eye-wateringly expensive wedding favours!), it’s not far-fetched to hope for free water at a wedding. Especially when it’s held outdoors in the heat! A viral Reddit post, however, revealed that it might not always be the case!

In a thread on the subreddit r/weddingshaming, the original poster (OP) shared that they attended a wedding of an acquaintance, which quickly turned into a nightmare for them. The guests showed up to the ceremony, which was held outdoors on a 35-degree Celsius day, and realised that they would have to pay for water and other drinks at the bar themselves.

“I knew nothing coming into this wedding aside from the time and place. That was the only information given on the invitation, and there was no wedding website to get more information,” wrote OP. “Turns out, it was an outdoor wedding on a humid 35° and sunny afternoon (thought it was indoor because I looked up the venue). People were in shorts, tees, and slip-ons, and others were in floor-length gowns. One lady was in a full white dress.”

The OP continued to explain that there were no directions given to the guests for the flow of the ceremony.

“I follow the herd to the bar line. At this point, I am drowning in my own sweat, and all I want is water,” they wrote. "I’m not paying attention to the people in front of me because I’m busy trying to fight off flies. My turn in line and I ask for water. 'You got it, $2.' I look up and I see the sign. No free beverages- period. Not even water." OP shared that the bar only accepted cash.

This was not it. The food, OP shared, was also inedible. The buffet featured home-cooked food that was covered in flies. Moreover, by the time they reached the dessert stage, all plates and forks were gone.

“I truly don’t feel like this was real life,” they wrote. "Like this had to be a practical joke, right?”

The post was followed by comments from other Reddit users who also expressed their disbelief at the lack of planning at the wedding. “I truly am an easy-going guest. I have zero issue with cash bars, I will very rarely complain about the choices a couple made to celebrate their big day. But at a wedding in the dead of summer, you gotta provide some kind of beverage to your guests,” wrote one user.

Another succinctly summed up what we all thought while reading OP’s post when they wrote, “You stayed much longer than I would have.”
