Why do we always choose the bad guys over the good ones? Love triangles from the fiction world prove that sometimes the red flags steal our hearts more than the green ones.

If you love a good romantic movie or TV show, you are sure to know that a love triangle is a staple to keep things spicy between the characters and the storyline interesting. They create drama, build the tension and take the debates among fans to a newer level with each twist. And with these love triangles, there comes a question that puts your loyalty to the characters to the test.
Despite knowing who the right person is, you most often side with the characters that you actually should be wary of, and they instead become the one you secretly hope will win your heart as well. So, if you’re team in Jellyfish in The Summer I Turned Pretty, you might just be rooting for a character who may not be the best choice, and thus you know the thrill that comes with it. Now, here’s a look at some other love triangles where you might have cheered for the wrong person simply for the rush of it.

You know it, we know it! Stefan was the better choice. He was responsible and caring, while Damon was impulsive, reckless and often manipulative. While wrong for various reasons, fans could not help but swoon over Damon’s passion and intensity, even though his actions frequently caused chaos.
A red flag, by definition, fans rooted for the bad boy because of the charm he radiated, and team Damon became synonymous with rooting for the villain of the stories, proving how tempting a red flag can be.

Amongst the three boyfriends that Rory had across the different phases of her life, fans have always been torn between Dean and Jess. Her love triangle with the two boys had the fans divided about choosing the steady, sweet boyfriend-Dean-or Jess, the brooding, rebellious outsider.
While Dean was a better, more sensible option, Jess’s intensity, moody behaviour and unpredictability had the fans rooting for him because of the thrill his personality made them feel, and that proved that sometimes passion trumps stability.

Bollywood’s most iconic love triangle between Rahul, Anjali and Aman from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai still has the internet and the fans of the movie divided even after all these years.
Karan Johar’s 1998 film where the female protagonist, Anjali, chooses her best friend, Rahul from eight years ago who never really thought of her from a romantic perspective until she “turned pretty” over Aman, her understanding, loving fiance while upsetting to a lot of the fans has still been one of the best examples how passion and unpredictability often makes people choose the red flags over the green because of it makes them feel.

In this 2001 Bollywood romance, Maddy and Rajeev vie for Reena’s affection, but Maddy, a charming yet mischievous character, deceives the female protagonist and impersonates Rajeev just to win Reena’s heart, who is engaged to be married to Rajeev, a sweet and respectful character, who stays in London.
Despite the deception, Reena chooses Maddy, drawn to his passion and sincerity, and if you made the same choice while watching the movie, you know the allure of a red flag and how strong it is.

If you have watched Friends and hoped that Rachel would end up with Joey instead of Ross, like some of us, you should know that you chose a red flag. Rachel’s choice between Ross and Joey was one of the best examples of rooting for the wrong person.
Joey, while being the most lovable and fun friend, was a red flag when it came to emotional depth and commitment yet fans couldn’t help choosing him over Ross and that reflects that we often choose the guy that makes us feel a rush of emotions, someone who would be indifferent to others but extremely loving to us (that’s problematic).
Nonetheless, whether it’s Jeremiah, Damon, Jess, Maddy or Rahul, all of these characters establish one thing that love is not always about making the right choice-most often, but about the thrill of emotions a particular person makes us feel. And while choosing the red flag might not be the ideal decision in real life, it makes a fictional story that much more iconic and unforgettable for the audience.
