Picking a wedding photographer sounds simple until you realise just how much rides on it. Long after the flowers have wilted, the decor is packed away, and the food is forgotten, your photographs are what stay. Yet, many couples end up making a few common mistakes while choosing the person responsible for capturing one of the biggest days of their lives.

According to Udit Chetal of Udit Chetal Photography, these are some of the most common mistakes couples tend to make and why avoiding them can make all the difference.

    Choosing Only based on Price

One of the biggest mistakes? Picking a photographer based only on budget. “Biggest one. People go like, ‘yaar budget tight hai, photographer sasta mil gaya,’” says Udit.

But later, many end up regretting the decision because photos are the only thing that stays after the wedding. If couples are spending on every aspect, from décor to food, then photography should also be treated as an important investment.

Booking Without Understanding the Photographer’s Style

Not every photographer shoots the same way, and that’s something couples often overlook. “Some like candid, some like dramatic, some like very editorial,” Udit explains.

Many couples book a photographer without really understanding whether their style matches their own vibe and personality. A mismatch can leave couples disappointed when the final album doesn’t feel like “them.”

Not Having a Proper Conversation Before Booking

Sometimes, couples finalise everything after just a few calls or WhatsApp conversations. “No proper discussion on expectations, timings, important moments,” says Udit.

A wedding day moves quickly, and if expectations are not discussed in advance, important moments may be missed, or confusion can happen later.

    Forgetting to Prioritise Comfort

This one, according to Udit, is seriously underrated. “If you’re not comfortable with your photographer, it shows in pictures.”

Wedding photography is deeply personal. The more comfortable couples feel around their photographer, the more natural and genuine the photos turn out. Awkward energy often translates into awkward pictures.

    Overloading Shot Lists from Pinterest

Pinterest inspiration is great, but there can be too much of it. “They send 200 reference images,” Udit says.

The reality is that weddings are dynamic, not a photoshoot set. Good photographers focus on capturing moments naturally instead of simply recreating poses from reference pictures.

    Not Asking About Delivery Timelines

Another mistake couples often realise only after the wedding? Not asking when the photos will arrive. “After the wedding, ‘When will we get the photos’ And then frustration starts,” Udit shares.

Having clarity about delivery timelines beforehand can save couples a lot of unnecessary stress later.

Expecting the Photographer to Work Magic

Many couples assume photographers can fix everything, but photography depends on planning too. “If decor is incomplete, lighting is bad, or timeline delayed, even the best photographer can only do so much,” says Udit.

Good wedding photos are a team effort. Proper timelines, lighting, and planning all play a major role in how the final pictures turn out.
