Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck of Bhutan ties the knot in an intimate fanfare that surprised everyone.

Congratulations are for Bhutan’s royal family. Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuk garnered global attention as he tied the knot with Ugen Choden Namgyel on August 25, 2025, in a ceremony in the city of Thimphu.
An intimate affair, the fanfare of the wedding surprised the well-wishers within Bhutan as well as around the world, with only one wedding photograph released officially. It showed the reigning monarch King Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuk and Queen Jetsun Pema, often compared to international royalties for their grace. The couple was photographed in their traditional attire, offering a glimpse of the celebration.
Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuk, the son of his majesty the fourth Druk Gyalpo, Jigme Singye Wangchuk and her Majesty the Queen Mother, Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuk, was once heir presumptive to the Bhutanese throne and was succeeded by his nephew, Crown Prince Jigme Namgyel Wangchuk in 2016. The bride, Ugen Choden Namgyel, is the daughter of Mr. Singye Namgyel and Mrs Tshering Lhamo and now takes on the role of a Bhutanese Princess after the wedding.
While little is known about their courtship or their wedding, the ceremony took place at Dechencholing Palace, a residence that holds deep significance for the royals since it was not only the birthplace of the groom’s father, the Fourth Druk Gyalpo but was also built in honour of the coronation of Prince Jigyel’s grandfather, the Third Druk Gyalpo, Jigme Dorji Wangchuk.
The newlyweds received sacred blessings from King Jigme Khesar, his Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo and His Holiness the Je Khenpo, Bhutan’s highest spiritual leader, in keeping with the country’s Buddhist traditions.
Prince Jigyel Ugyen has spent his life in service and international presence. Educated at Choate Rosemary Hall in Connecticut and later at Oxford University, the Prince has been representing Bhutan on the global platform for a very long time. In 2008, he delivered the opening address at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington D.C., and in 2016 he joined the King and Queen in welcoming Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, during their royal visit to Bhutan.
