As the India Couture Week comes to an end, it’s safe to say that this season gave us a lot to talk about. From designers like Rahul Mishra and Tarun Tahiliani ditching traditional shows for walkthrough presentations (making us wonder if this is the future of fashion shows), to getting original soundtracks from shows like Kunal Rawal and House of Masaba, this season was super interesting, to say the least. The fashion, of course, had us gushing after a bunch of shows. We, for one, still find ourselves scrolling through the ICW looks in our photo gallery. Fringes and tassels were huge this season—dresses covered entirely in fringes, capes with tassels hanging from the hem, blouses with fringes hanging from the hem, even belts with tassels! Nearly every show this season had looks with tassels or fringes! Take this as your sign to invest in garments with hangings that move with you as you do!
If the India Couture Week is anything to go by, bandeau blouses will be the biggest blouse trend of the season. Bandeau blouses were spotted with both, saris and lehengas, across shows like House of Masaba, Arpita Mehta, Rimzim Dadu. They’re effortless, sexy and super glam. There’s no reason not to invest in one this wedding season!
While A-line lehengas are classic, fishtail lehengas were having a major moment at ICW. The beautiful skirt silhouette that hugs you like a glove till a little until flaring out ever-so-lightly from the knee-below will beautifully accentuate your curves. This silhouette was seen at a bunch of shows including Falguni Shane Peacock, Rimzim Dadu, Dolly J, Anamika Khanna, Aisha Rao, and Arpita Mehta.
This season signals the return of the quintessential red Indian bride. A bunch of collections had red bridal lehengas this season, from Arpita Mehta to JJ Valaya. Dolly J in particular, had a series of red bridal looks that opened the show. It’s rather safe to assume that pastels will be out, and classic red will be in for brides this season!
Super exaggerated, voluminous, pannier-like skirts might be a niche trend when it comes to Indian occasionwear, but it was all over the runway this season. From House of Masaba doing a tissue ball skirt with an embroidered shirt, to Anamika Khanna doing a printed ball skirt with a textured bustier, we saw quite a few variations. Our favourite one though? Jayanti Reddy’s elegant sage green ball skirt!
This penchant for Victorian fashion wasn’t limited to the skirts. Dramatic, exaggerated collars are the flavour of the season. From the Victorian collar bands and vampire-like collars at Rohit Bal, to pleated Victorian era-inspired collars at Anamika Khanna, we saw it all this season!
While we saw the super snug churidar pants silhouette in shows like House of Masaba and JJ Valaya, our biggest takeaway this season, when it comes to pants, is balloon pants! While Falguni Shane Peacock chose to pair it with long kurtas, Kunal Rawal did beautiful bandhgalas paired with balloon pants.
