Mae, a homegrown label, is repurposing treasured, old brocades into edgy bridalwear.

In India, brocade has always been (delightfully) synonymous with weddings. No celebration is complete without at least a few sightings of the rich, gleaming fabric—in silks and satins and interwoven with threads of gold or silver—crafted into lush, flowy lehengas, ghararas, saris, even gowns. There is one brand, however, that is taking the Indian weddings’ love affair with this resplendent beauty a step further. Mae, a homegrown label launched in 2014, is reimagining it as…bridal lingerie! Yes, bralettes, bustiers, onesies, with thongs and panties, in Banarasi brocade and lace.
“Why should a bride’s innerwear be any less dressy? The idea was to give brides the same opulence on the inside, too,” Jayeta Rohilla, Founder of the brand, tells Manifest. “It is luxe, sensual…and a little cheeky. I love designing pieces that hold emotion but don’t follow the usual rules. That’s the Mae bride: she knows what traditions mean, but she also knows how to embrace them her own way!”

Another conventional diktat the Mae bride is upending is the colour scheme trousseaus usually adhere to. The colours here aren’t limited to just reds and maroons—there are bold blacks and bright oranges, too. “Our bride is a baddie, with great taste. She’s self-aware, opinionated, and unafraid to take up space. She knows herself—what she wants, more importantly, what she doesn’t want—and she’s not dressing to please anyone else. Her wedding isn’t a performance. It’s an experience—for her, first.
For this fashion-forward bride of today—who also treasures culture and heritage—Mae also has an after-party range, complete with slinky dresses, fun co-ords, et al. And warm outerwear, for all the nippy weather needs, when you don’t want to hide all the finery under boring shawls. Think sequinned brocade bomber jackets, Zardozi-encrusted zippers, the like. The best part: all these can all be made from new saris as well as precious heirlooms turned into meaningful, nostalgic works of art. These are perfect stopgaps for all your in-between wedding events, such as prewedding lunches, post-wedding dinners, etc—where you don’t want to be in full bridal gear, but still want to feel bridal…and of course, be the main lead
